Tips
and Tricks: Introduction WHY USE A SEALANT? The exterior casing of buildings is composed of a number of different materials. Each time two materials come into contact, it is crucial that any gaps be sealed to prevent air and water infiltration. Air infiltration in the walls of a home can result in a loss of heat and can lead to discomfort for residents. Water infiltrations cause deterioration in building materials and result in very costly problems. Elastomer sealants have been developed specifically to prevent such problems. In this handbook, we use the terms "caulking" and "sealant". “Caulking" is used for lower quality products, i.e. bituminous products and products with a drying oil base. Following are a few examples of exterior and interior joints that should be sealed. Examples of Exterior Joints ![]() Examples of Interior Joints ![]() |
